I followed the directions that came with the fryer and peeled and chopped the potatoes, soaked them in cold water and dried them, then air -fried them with a little oil and salt for 15-20 minutes, shaking them once or twice as they cooked. As a side dish for two people, I could easily fit plenty of fries in my air fryer.
I think just about any “sturdy” vegetable would air -fry up nicely with a little of oil and salt, and I could see that throwing a few veggies in the air fryer would make for a fast, easy side dish with just about any dinner. It needed a few minutes to heat up, but it was hot by the time I was finished slicing the sprouts and tossing them in a little oil and salt.
And, on occasion, you should clean the main body of your air fryer to remove grease and food splatters, which can build up and cause the fryer to emit smoke, Uccello said. By not cleaning your air fryer in between recipes, you could be imparting unwanted flavors and pieces of food from your previous dish onto your latest meal, added Puck.
And for proteins with uneven thickness, such as pork tenderloins or fish fillets, fold the thinner “tails” underneath to create a more uniform size and ensure even cooking, he said. Chelsea Davis for Insider Puck said air fryers are also great for baking desserts.
“If you are looking to make a beautiful homemade dessert, the air fryer is perfect for baking doughnuts, casseroles, and even cakes,” Puck told Insider. Before using your air fryer to make desserts, just be sure that the appliance is as clean as possible so that you don't impart any unwanted savory flavors into your sweets, Puck added.
Westinghouse is the first in the Australian market to release a range of ovens featuring an in-built 'Air Fry' mode. Westinghouse claims this design removes the need to turn food throughout the cooking process, but Fiona found this isn't actually the case.
So the Westinghouse's Air Fry mode has a similar capacity to some larger bench top air fryer models. And while air fryers typically require no preheating, Fiona recommends preheating Air Fry mode for 10 minutes when cooking fresh (not frozen) food to avoid soggy results.
Running costs In terms of electricity consumption, we found Air Fry mode comparable to an average bench top air fryer. Fiona put the Westinghouse through its paces using our air fryer test method in our kitchen labs.
Air Fry mode received an overall performance score of 70%, which is decent but significantly lower than many bench top air fryers we've tested. It scored well for cooking chicken wings, frozen chips and crumbed chicken, but was let down by producing homemade chips that managed to be both soggy and burnt and it also failed to produce a crispy crackling on the roast pork.
Air fry is an oven feature that works like a countertop air fryer. Inside an air fryer oven, super-heated air circulates around the food to provide crispy, golden results without all the oil that deep-frying requires.
Air frying works best with a dark, non-stick baking sheet with low sides. Crispy food needs enough oil to bind batters and coatings, but not too much or you'll end up with soggy results.
If the food has a crumbly or floury outside texture, try spraying it with a little more oil. Air fry works best on dark pans because they get and stay hot very quickly.
Shiny foil reflects heat off the bakeware, which may change your results. Items in this location can cause issues with air circulation and direct heat in any oven.
This will keep the bottom of the oven clean and free of fallen bits that can burn or cause odors later. Remember, do not place pans directly on the oven bottom to keep heat circulating correctly.
The Air Fry Tray is dishwasher safe, but for optimal cleaning, we recommend washing it by hand. When some high-fat or greasy foods (like fresh wings) meet that hot air inside an oven, some smoke is normal.
This keeps drips and crumbs from landing on the oven bottom, where they can burn and create smoke. For additional protection, place some foil-lined parchment paper on the baking sheet.
Don’t overcrowd the food on your baking sheet or on the Air Fry Tray. If air can’t circulate around each item, the cooking and crisping process may slow down and allow more grease to settle or drip.
Some foods, like fresh wings and some vegetables, have a lot of moisture and may drip more than you expect. For items that might drip, use a pan with low sides if you’re not using an Air Fry Tray.
Its promise: to match the taste and texture of your favorite deep-fried foods–minus the all the fat and all those extra calories. This countertop kitchen appliance and its pledge to make crispy, close-to-fried perfection sounds promising.
An air fryer uses a heating element along with a fan circulating hot air above and around your food to convert tiny amounts of moisture into mist. As a bonus, cooking in an air fryer can save you time and it makes cleanup easy.
While it's possible to enjoy air -fried food with no oil, the beauty of this appliance is that it only needs such a small amount. The little of oil you do add helps brown and caramelize everything for extra crispy and delicious results.
Both Gourmet and Philips brands cooked golden fries (fresh and frozen) and a pound of cornmeal-crusted chicken drumsticks to our ideal level of crispness. Lightweight and sleek, the Gourmet provided the best, most consistent texture and flavor in the least amount of time.
A digital touch screen with various presets from frozen foods to baked goods keeps cooking times and temps easy to read. The first fryer to hit the market, the Philips was our winner in the homemade french fry category.
An air fryer is basically a mini convection oven. Like a convection oven, it uses a fan to circulate heat around food so it cooks evenly.
So why not use something that gets the same crunch and flavor of a deep fryer but with a fraction of the fat? That’s because the hot air inside the air fryer does all the cooking.
No doubt about it, frozen food is a lifesaver when you need a quick dinner. Plus, with breaded items like onion rings, you’ll get a much crispier result.
Frying is messy, especially at high heats with oil jumping all over the place. Then you have to dispose of the waste and scrub the pan to get rid of the fat.
In an air fryer : a) you’ve got less oil, which means less washing up liquid. b) most air fryers’ baskets are dishwasher safe, so you can quickly pop them in there.
That means you can bake rolls, pastry and even cakes in an air fryer. So, remember to line your air fryer with baking parchment if you’re making rolls.
