The half-pound of shrimp the recipe calls for fit nicely in the bottom of my fryer ’s basket, with room for the air to circulate around and brown it. Patted dry and air -fried for about 30 minutes, they finished with skin that was deliciously brown and crispy.
And dismantled, the basket takes up about half of the top drawer of my dishwasher, so I found myself handwashing it most of the time. The fan that circulates the air in the fryer and chips everything up so perfectly is on the loud side, at least in my model.
The Philips website says the fan noise can be up to 65 decibels, comparable to a vacuum cleaner. I followed the directions that came with the fryer and peeled and chopped the potatoes, soaked them in cold water and dried them, then air -fried them with a little oil and salt for 15-20 minutes, shaking them once or twice as they cooked.
As a side dish for two people, I could easily fit plenty of fries in my air fryer. I think just about any “sturdy” vegetable would air -fry up nicely with a little of oil and salt, and I could see that throwing a few veggies in the air fryer would make for a fast, easy side dish with just about any dinner.
It needed a few minutes to heat up, but it was hot by the time I was finished slicing the sprouts and tossing them in a little oil and salt. And the trays I used for cooking the sprouts only take as much room as two dinner plates in my dishwasher.
Testers made french fries in the Nu Wave 37001 air fryer to find out whether air -fried food tastes like the real thing. That's the golden promise of air fryers, and it probably explains why, in the U.S., about 4 million were sold in just a year.
That represents a tenfold increase in two years, according to the market research firm NPD Group. A fan circulates hot air to quickly cook food in the basket from the outside in.
In the lab, more than two dozen models in our air fryer ratings turned out nicely cooked food, though staffers who sampled the results weren't fooled into thinking they were deep-fried. “Even when we held cooking times and temperatures constant, the results were very similar, with no discernible differences in taste,” says Caught.
“The real difference among air fryers comes down to convenience, so we designed our tests around that.” We evaluate capacity, how easy the controls are to read and use, noise levels, and how much elbow grease it takes to clean a model.
Here's a roundup of the six best air fryers from CR's latest tests, listed alphabetically (not by rank order). It can slow down cooking and keep air from reaching all the food, giving you uneven results.
CR's take: The shape of the Elite Platinum EAF-1506D air fryer makes it seem bigger than it is; its measured capacity is 3.4 quarts. The dials are fairly easy to read and use, but the nooks and crannies of the food basket make it tough to clean.
Its touch buttons and programmed settings are among the easiest to see and use, earning an Excellent rating in our assessment. The exterior’s crevices and the basket’s nooks and crannies take some effort to clean, however.
CR's take: Testers found that the 3-quart Ninja AF100's electronic controls with preprogrammed settings were also among the easiest to see and use, earning a rating of Excellent in our assessment of them. Like the bigger Nu Wave, the Trio has electronic controls with preprogrammed settings that are among the easiest to see and use of the tested air fryers, earning an Excellent rating.
CR’s take: The Nu Wave 37001 air fryer boasts a measured capacity of 5.8 quarts. This air fryer is on the noisy side, earning only a Good rating in our noise tests.
For years, I've covered the increasing water and energy efficiency of washers and what it means to consumers, along with innovations in a variety of products, and whether manufacturers deliver on their promises. They create a nice “fried” finish that your oven range can't compete with, as well as, reheating results that blow away the average microwave.
Plus, an air fryer requires only a small amount of oil to make foods crispy with a fraction of the calories and fat of traditional cooking methods, like deep-frying. Our top performers air fried food to a crispy texture with a moist interior and were easy to use with large, easy-to-read controls that barely required the owner’s manual.
Cooked food the quickest in our tests Easy to use with large, intuitive buttons It scored the highest marks across the board for ease of use, thanks to its easy-to-use and -read buttons and clear owner’s manual.
During our tests, the air fryer basket slid in and out easily, which made handling a breeze. We’re fans of the basket’s slick, ceramic interior and removable tray, which makes it nonstick.
The tray also fits snugly and securely on the bottom of the basket so you don’t have to worry about it falling out when you turn the food out onto a plate. Both are dishwasher safe and easy to clean, even if you choose to hand wash.
In addition to being easy to use, The Ninja Hairdryer Max XL scored the highest in performance. The model we tested comes with a broiling rack for even quicker and juicier results and melty cheese.
The different settings are programmed with unique maximum and minimum temperatures, so you can intuitively achieve different cooking results. One thing to keep in mind is its vented basket, which promotes air circulation, also allows for dripping if you don’t empty the grease buildup between rounds.
The air fryer basket is large (6 quarts) and square, which creates more cooking space than its round competitors, making a smart home investment for a family. We tested the pictured digital version, which not only made the most evenly-colored toast, but also the crispiest air fried food in the shortest amount of time.
The rectangular 15.5 by 16-inch air fry rack offers a large cooking surface and sits atop a drip/crumb tray for easy cleanup. The Color’s 3.7-quart square basket offers a lot of cooking space, especially compared to its round competitors.
The control panel is loaded with presets that are programmed with recommended cooking temperatures and times, including a preheat option, which is not common on air fryers. In our tests, the Color scored high for ease of use, and over 800 five-star reviewers on Amazon agree.
Frozen fries required almost 10 minutes less than the manufacturer’s instructions, so keep an eye on the goodies you’re cooking. The racks stack, which allow you to air fry thin and dehydrate up to four layers at a time.
Our favorite feature of the Philips Premium Hairdryer is its compact shape that still cooks enough food for one to two portions. At 2.5 quarts, it’s the smallest of the Philips air fryers, which comes in XL and XXL sizes.
In our tests, the lid helped make crisp frozen fries that were moist on the inside, not dried out and evenly golden. It also allows for air frying greasy foods, such as sausages, which are not typically recommended in an air fryer because they can cause smoking.
In addition to the lid, the Philips is very easy to use with a user-friendly control panel and four preset settings. We love that it comes in an assortment of colors that pop, unlike most air fryers on the market.
