Call me dramatic, but this isn’t the first time I’ve been nervous about the safety of slow cookers, and Jack being ripped away from his family in the name of cooking utensils just added fuel to the fire (too soon? For nearly 50 years, with over 100 million Crock-Pots sold, we have never received any consumer complaints similar to the fictional events portrayed in last night’s episode.

Just like many fans, we will be watching next week’s episode to see how Jack’s story progresses and, regardless of the outcome, we want consumers first and foremost to know they are safe when using their Crock-Pot. EARLIER: I think what really resonated with people about this specific episode of This Is Us is the fact that the Pearson's, and fans of the show, are losing Jack to something as ordinary as a slow cooker.

The final scene of the Jan. 23 episode captures Jack cleaning up the kitchen after the Super Bowl, seemingly turning off the slow cooker (the brand of which is not shown) and heading to bed. But, of course, there's a brief flashback during the episode where we learn that the slow cooker was a gift from a neighbor who warned that the switch was defective, foreshadowing the very old device turning back on and causing the fire.

While the brand ensures their slow cookers are safe for countertop cooking for extended periods of time,” public information director of the New York Fire Department, Jim Long, disagrees. Aside from making the conscious decision to leave your slow cooker on when you're out of the house, there are a few basic protocols to keep in mind so that you don't run into any problems.

If you feel safe turning on the device and running errands for a few hours, consider using a programmable slow cooker so that you have better control of the heat settings. And, last but not least, learn from Jack's mistake and never invest in or accept a vintage slow cooker unless you've tested it out or have had it looked at by someone knowledgeable in the space, because it's always better to be safe than sorry.

Julia Mazurkevych/Shutterstock Although it’s tempting to throw a frozen meal directly into the slow cooker, don’t. It’s much safer to let your frozen meat drop to room temperature before you cook.

If using a prepared frozen package, make sure to follow its specific thawing instructions. Wanphen chairing/Shutterstock That recipe you are working with may ask for eight chicken breasts, but make sure your slow cooker can handle it first.

Taste of Home Though it’s not unsafe to cook large pieces of meat, (we love a good slow cooker pork roast recipe) cutting your meat into smaller sections can lessen the cook time and make it easier to fit more ingredients into the dish. This keeps the ingredients from getting too hot, sticking to the bottom of the dish and potentially burning.

And while the health risks of lead are great for all of us, they are especially harmful to children, who absorb a higher proportion per body weight and are more vulnerable to its effects. In adults, lead poisoning is linked to a wide number of neurological problems.

In 2004, Bill Gerhard of Salt Lake City’s UTV investigated the lead content in a number of kitchen tools, including slow cookers. In his investigation, he took a number of slow cookers to the Data Chem Lab in Salt Lake where they were analyzed for lead.

His analysis found that 20% of slow cookers were leaching measurable amounts of lead into food. When ceramic vessels are heated to just 80 degrees Fahrenheit, they release ten times the amount of lead than they do at room temperature.

A vast majority of slow cookers state that their products do not contain leaded glaze or that their slow cooker is in accordance with government guidelines for lead (the FDA Compliance Policy states that leach levels of 1 mcg/mL are acceptable for large vessels such as slow cookers). Nor is this level indicative of the actual leaching that can occur with normal cooking and the variables of time, temperature or acidity of ingredients.

Many other companies purport that their product is “safe” as long as there is no cracking, chipping or haziness of the glaze. But that isn’t a very reassuring statement given the fact that micro-fissures could be undetectable to the eye and lead is a systemic poison with cumulative effects.

How to Protect Your Family from Lead Exposure In this day and age, there are many potential hazards in our food supply and cookware.
