Stop buying a new gingerbread house kit every time you want to do a fun project with the kids in the kitchen. Silicone material makes it easy to remove cookies.

Always use heat-resistant oven mitts or pads when you're handling or placing on surfaces. Do not insert toothpicks, knives, or other sharp objects into the mold.

Aerosol nonstick spray is not recommended; it will create a sticky residue which is difficult to clean. To deep clean, prepare a baking soda paste by mixing 1/2 cup (125 mL) of baking soda with 3 tbsp (45 mL) of water.

Stir in the flour, molasses, and spices until well combined (you may need to use your hands). Divide the dough into the cookie house molds.

Brush the molds with oil to prevent sticking. Press the dough into the molds with your fingers to cover the full surface area of the pieces.

Combine all the ingredients in a medium mixing bowl. Use a hand or stand mixer to beat the ingredients at medium speed for 5–7 minutes, or until icing is glossy and holds peaks.

Note: 3 pasteurized egg whites can be substituted for the meringue powder and water. Icing dries very quickly; cover with a damp towel when not being used.

Use a cake board or platter as a base for your house. Once the gingerbread pieces are completely cooled, fill a decorating bag with the Royal Icing.

Using even pressure, squeeze the icing onto the surface of the inside edge of the front piece and the bottom of both the front and side wall piece. Hold in place for about 1 minute, or until icing sets.

Gently press the other side wall piece into place. To attach the roof pieces, squeeze the icing completely around the top edge of the assembled front and back piece to create the roofline.

Gently trim any “over-baked” edges using a serrated knife and a sawing motion. Hot silicone can cause burns if handled improperly.

Some specialty Shrink Links products require slightly different designing and baking steps, so be sure to consult the package instructions as well. The most common types of Shrink Links plastic are translucent, so they're perfect for both tracing and creating your own freehand designs.

Cut your design slightly beyond the edges of the lines with scissors, and trim away any sharp corners. While the oven warms, cut one side of a brown grocery bag into a rectangle that fits on the top of a cookie sheet.

Place your Shrink Links designs colored-side up onto the paper, and then bake them for one to three minutes once the oven has heated. Slide the paper off the cookie sheet and place it onto a heat-resistant surface such as a cool stove burner.

Press a flat weight, such as a phone book or thick pad of paper, on the warm Shrink Links for 15 seconds as they cool. While ventilation is not required, opening a window slightly while working removes any potential odors or fumes.

Remove the cookie sheet from the oven, and press a flat weight such as a phone book on the Shrink Links for 15 seconds or so to help them flatten. To achieve this, bake the designed plastic on the brown paper and a cookie sheet, as you normally would.

Remove the cookie sheet from the oven once the plastic has shrunk and lies relatively flat. We offer a wide variety of silicone rubber materials to meet requirements for heat resistance and thermal conductivity.
