There are a lot of factors that go into this; budget, features, size, brand, and bling (it’s gotta look good for the ‘gram right? It has all the features you could ever want including a rotating racking arm, whirlpool inlet, dished bottom and etched volume markings.

Personally, I started with a turkey fryer to test the waters and see if I would even like home brewing. You can definitely get larger or small kettles but this is the most common range that is still considered home brew size.

You could probably go a little smaller than that but you will probably end up having to top up your wort with water or risk the dreaded boil-over. A full volume boil is one of the first things you can do to help improve the quality of your beer so just size your kettle appropriately upfront.

The bigger concern for me is that you can’t use my favorite brewery cleaner, Clean Free. Invest in stainless if you have the money or you plan on staying in the hobby for a long time.

Also, with a wide kettle, the foam has less distance to travel to go over the side of the pot. Eichmann Engineering recommends a height to diameter ratio of 1.2 to 1 for brew kettles.

The main goal of having a sight glass on your kettle is to be able to record your reboil and post boil volumes. A true dam is a bit of a luxury item for home brewers.

There aren’t a lot of companies that even offer a kettle with a true dam. I am lazy, so I used to just move it all to the fermentor back when I had a turkey fryer kettle.

I honestly don’t think there is any difference in the end product but it will only take you 3 seconds to find someone who disagrees. A whirlpool inlet is the first thing I looked for when I upgraded from a turkey fryer to my ESIAB setup.

By pumping wort out of your kettle and back in through a tangential inlet, you create an eddy or whirlpool that will collect all of your true, hot break and isomerized hop material in the center of your kettle making it easier to leave these materials behind when you send your wort to the fermentor. Your budget, heat source, and preferences will all play a part in determining which kettle is right for you.

The design is beautiful, it has welded ports with sanitary ISICLAMP fittings and a tangential whirlpool inlet. SS Brew tech also included a sight glass, rotatable pickup tube, etched volume markings and a dished bottom for better true collection.

Stout Tanks and Kettles is my other favorite home brew equipment supplier. It has a mirror finish polish, thermoses, tangential inlet, 1.5” ISICLAMP port for an electric element.

Like the SS Brew tech kettle, all the ports are welded with sanitary fittings. Stout Tanks offers a version of this kettle from 9 gallons all the way up to 4-bbl.

The Mega pot 1.2 (Amazon) is about half the cost of the Stout Tanks and SS Brew tech kettles but still offers a lot a bang for your buck. You lose the welded sanitary fittings but maintain all the other features.

If you have an induction stove top, you won’t find a better ferroelectric kettle at this price. This is a great kettle to get your feet wet with electric brewing.

I really like that this version comes with a ball valve, thermometer, bulkheads, and a false bottom. The false bottom helps filter hops or it can keep grains from burning if you use the kettle for Bias.

It includes all the features you expect from a high-end brew kettle ; sight glass, thermometer, and of course, a patent-pending valve for control the flow of wort for sparking, altering and chilling. I would recommend the Stout Tanks electric kettle over this but if that is just a little out of your budget, the Eichmann G2 is still a great choice.

When you decide to make something yourself, you’ll have a lot more control over the end product, and this goes for everything from food to drinks, and even to DIY applications. Nobody will deny that a home cooked meal is better than what you’ll find pre-made in stores, so it begs the question as to why we don’t look at alcohol similarly.

Well, there are plenty of reasons that people don’t distill their own spirits or brew their own beer, but you’ll find that making your own alcohol is a rewarding experience. Most buyers will opt for something a little bigger like the best 10-gallon brew kettle because it will give them a bit more margin for error in preventing boil overs.

Wort is the liquid that you get from mashing the ingredients that you’re going to make your beer out of, and the boiling process helps bring out the sugars that will be fermented into alcohol. Finally, we’ll discuss some aspects to search for in the best kettle, so that it will be easier for you to figure out which model works best for your needs.

For example, this brewing kettle is made out of stainless steel, which will provide unrivaled durability and corrosion resistance, which is necessary for dealing with acidic wort. Shop now at Amazon.com The thermometer which comes equipped on this model may not be accurate right away, but thankfully, you’ll find a calibration screw positioned on the back of it.

While this model arrives deconstructed for easier shipping, putting it back together shouldn’t be too much of a problem as long as you have a wrench. If you don’t mind paying for quality, this brew kettle from AIH is another excellent choice, and it comes with quite a few features that demonstrate its superior construction.

First off, the 15-gallon capacity of this pot makes it ideal for brewers who are just starting off, as you can gradually increase the size of your batches. The bottom of this pot features an aluminum core which helps it heat up quickly, this ensures that you won’t have to wait around for the boil to start.

Unlike many other pots, this model also comes with quality Teflon tape that will stop any leaks from developing in the first place. Overall, this pot may be one of the more pricey choices on the market, but you’ll find that it features excellent construction that makes it well worth the added cost.

For those of you willing to spend a little more on a high-capacity brew pot, this model from Bayou Classic is an excellent deal, especially when you consider that it’s being sold below retail. The vented lid on this model will also help prevent the buildup of too much water, as a lot of the vapor can escape.

Shop now at Amazon.com This pot is ideal for preventing solids from building up in your liquid, as it features two systems to help filter them out. You’ll find that this is essentially a smaller version of the product that we just reviewed, though it’s equipped with fewer accessories.

For example, while this brew kettle may be equipped with side indentations for a false bottom, you’ll have to purchase one separately if you’d like to filter out your solids more effectively. Shop now at Amazon.com You’ll find that the stainless steel thermometer which comes mounted on this brew kettle also features temperature ranges are recommended for different recipes.

Of course, the low price point also contributes to this models' suitability for novice brewers, though it may not be ideal for grain brewing because of the single-ply bottom. Finally, the ball valve which comes equipped on this kettle is surprisingly durable and turns smoothly, which is more than you can say for much of the competition.

In addition to lasting longer, an excellent brew kettle will give you better performance when you’re boiling the wort. Better brew kettles will come equipped with more accessories that will make it easier for you to judge the progress of your wort, so you’ll also be less likely to end up with a ruined batch.

Grain brewing requires your involvement in every step of the process, from mashing to boiling the wort that you get out of it, and low-quality pots will simply not work. Before making your purchase, consider whether you want to keep your brew kettle for a long time or if you can see yourself replacing it if you end up liking the hobby.

A poorly-built pot will be much more likely to fail after extended use, and the last thing you want is the handles falling off of your kettle while it’s full of boiling wort, as that is a severe hazard. In the end, a brew kettle is much like any other product in that you get what you pay for, but this doesn’t mean that you can’t find more affordable models with excellent build quality.

For example, aluminum models may be more affordable and lighter, but you’ll find that they suffer when it comes to durability and resistance to corrosion, which are both essential. Stainless steel is by far the most popular material that brew kettles are made out of because they can put up with more acidic wort, and they feature excellent resilience.

Taking a look at the valve that comes equipped with a brew kettle will help you determine how simple the recovery process will be. On the other hand, a triply bottom will be ideal for grain brewing since that will result in even heating and will get rid of the hot spots that are responsible for scorching.

A vented cover will help prevent too much water buildup from condensation, and that will make boil overs less likely. Bestrews spends thousands of hours researching, analyzing, and testing products to recommend the best picks for most consumers.

The material you opt for when selecting your brew kettle will largely depend on your budget. Brew kettles are generally either made out of stainless steel or aluminum, both of which have their pros and cons.

Unfortunately, it is also pretty pricey so investing in a stainless steel brew kettle requires some thought as well as a big budget. If you’re planning on doing a lot of home brewing and love to invest in equipment that is built to last for several decades than selecting a stainless steel brew kettle is a wise choice.

This means that it can react with cleaning products and can pass off flavors into your beers if not treated properly. If you decide to go with the cheaper aluminum option you will need to develop an oxide layer on the inside of your brew kettle in order to protect your beer.

Some brewers don’t mind taking this additional step in the process but if this sounds like too much effort it might be worth spending some extra cash on a stainless steel brew kettle. This really is an essential feature of a brew kettle as it makes measuring out all of your ingredients so much easier and it takes you one step closer to ensuring the perfect beer.

This is situated in the perfect place to be able to accurately give a reading of the temperature of your wort which is necessary to ensure a successful boil. #2 Ball Valves This simple addition to a brew kettle can really save you a lot of difficulties when it comes to transferring your wort to another vessel.

Attempting to maneuver a huge brew kettle full of boiling hot wort can be a little daunting (not to mention dangerous) and so having a ball valve attached means you can allow the wort to be transferred in a much more controlled manner. This handy piece of equipment makes collecting the wort easy and efficient and helps to ensure that it is not transferred to the next vessel.

This great value brew kettle from Concord Cookware is a good choice if you’re just starting out with home brewing and you don’t want to spend megabucks but still want to go with a stainless steel model. Here is another superb product from Northern Brewer and, as ever, they don’t disappoint when it comes to expert design and quality.

This is a great value brew kettle that has some excellent features that have been specifically designed to assist brewers of all abilities. The heavy-duty stainless steel construction makes this a sturdy brew kettle which is highly durable.

This set also comes with a false bottom whose job it is to reduce the incidence of particles and grain getting into the spigot chamber. It is made out of good quality stainless steel so is durable as well as easy to clean after you have boiled your wort.

There are also side calibration marks engraved in the brew kettle so that measuring out your wort ingredients is significantly easier than in an ordinary stockpot. Whatever you decide, brew kettles have been specifically designed for boiling your wort so are sure to improve the quality of the beer you produce.

Your budget Your preferred batch size Your demand for quality and durability The best brew kettles out there are, in my opinion, ones that will typically hit all the 3 points I listed above.

SS Brew tech is quickly becoming on the of the top names in the home brewing industry. Their build quality is unmatched, so it should come as no surprise why their signature Brew Kettle is my favorite.

Constructed using heavy-duty 18 gauge 304 stainless steel, this kettle can take a beating and still look and perform as good as it did on the first day! On the inside, you’ll find internal etched markings to ensure your volume is always at the right level.

A true dam helps filter out unwanted particles into your fermentor as it funnels through the 3 piece ball valve. Personally, I use this specific kettle for my mashing (along with the false bottom and temp gauge, which can be purchased separately).

It’s a solid piece of equipment from a company that earned my trust right out of the box! They are known for producing a variety of reliable brew kettles in all sorts of sizes.

(Source: brewersvault.com)

Compared to the SS Brew tech above, it is slightly thinner, but still durable enough to use as a brew kettle (especially for the typical 5 gallon batch size). Some folks say they’ve experienced issues with the ball valve, however, you need to ensure that it is properly installed.

Silicone coated handles make moving this monster safe and easy. The easy-to-open ball valve gives you total control over the flow of your hot wort as you transfer it to your fermentation vessel.

Albeit on the more expensive end, if you’re looking for something less than 10 gallons in size, this is one of the best brew kettles to fit the bill! Similar in nature to it’s “cousins” above, it’s construction of 304 stainless steel makes it a durable and reliable piece of equipment.

Full-boils of 5 gallon batches are a piece of cake, with plenty of headroom to prevent boil overs. The only downfall that I see with this particular kettle is that it is slightly thinner than some other models listed here (22 gauge stainless).

Still, it’s stronger than many kettles on the market and will last you many years (with good care, of course). Similar to the SsBrewtech Brew Kettle, the Keg co can be purchased with or without the thermometer attachment.

It’s convenient and allows you to monitor your temps during the mash without having to open up the lid and release heat. The Bayou Classic 10 gallon stainless brew kettle is perfect for new and old brewers alike.

It is budget friendly (less than $60) yet still has same build as its bigger brother (kettle with ball valve previously mentioned above). This can make transferring wort into your fermentor a bit tougher, as you’ll need to dump it in rather than let it flow from the spigot.

I’m looking to save some time on my brew day, and also up the batch volume of wort produced. I’ve done one Bias batch, as a test, in one of my 8 gallon kettles, and I really liked the way it worked out.
