If your child wants to try chopping, use a regular knife slice whatever hard item (potato, onion, carrots, etc.) A great practice option with these knives is cutting cereal, like Cheerios or Fruit Loops, in half.

I had Fruit Loops for a photography assignment, and had given her a few on the kids table. I was doing dishes in the kitchen when I heard her little, just turned two years old, voice say, “Cut it.

I quickly relieved her of her weapon, had a serious talk about sharp and blood, then asked why she wanted a knife. Table knives are also great for cutting soft fruits like berries, pears, and tangerines.

We do however let them start with any of the knives listed above, and teach them to use the knife with fingers wrapped firmly around the handle, and one hand behind their back. We got him the Kai Little Chef Club Children’s Stainless Steel Knife.

But it is safer than a typical kitchen knife because it has a blunt rounded end. If you’re cooking with kids who are older, you can teach them to use a claw hand, to hold their food as they cut.

By forming their hand into a claw, and holding the food in place with their fingertips, they are less likely to get a serious injury. Again, start with soft foods that are easy to slice, until they become more confident and safe in their knife skills.

Another trick I used when I taught cooking classes for kids is the finger jar. It’s a trick my 4th grade teacher did with the paper cutter in our classroom, and it still sticks out so strongly in my mind.

Then give it to your child and let them drive it like a car all over the counter, floor, cupboard doors, wherever! You end up with perfectly minced garlic, and they feel like a superstar doing it.

A pizza cutter wheel can be a fun way for kids to cut food. I find that the wheel works better for kids than an actual slicer with a handle.

Just remember that pizza wheels are sharp, and still need to be used with supervision. While a grape cutter has limited use, it may become your favorite chopping tool in the kitchen.

A good non-slip cutting board is super important for kids in the kitchen. I like these thin silicone cutting boards because they’re easy for the kids to move on their own.

Standard 8-inch chef's knives are too big for most kids, so we were pleased when we discovered kid-size versions a few years ago. These knives have handles designed for smaller hands, shorter 2- to 4-inch metal or plastic blades, and built-in safety features such as blunt cutting edges or finger guards.

With more on the market and a team of test cooks busy at work on our upcoming series of children's cookbooks, we wondered if our old favorite from Opined (about $45.00) was still the best. We put them through a round of basic tasks: slicing ripe tomatoes and blocks of cheddar cheese; dicing carrots, celery, and onion; and mincing parsley.

We knew from our previous standard chef's knife testings that the thickness of the spine affects how easily the blade cuts through food. Our panel of testers included 12 boys and girls aged 8 to 13, with a mix of righties and lefties.

The 8- and 9-year-olds all preferred our old winner, the Opined Le Petite Chef Cutlery Set (2 Pieces) (about $45.00). The 12- and 13-year-olds rated the Victorinox Swiss Army Fibrous Pro 6” Chef's Knife (about $20.00) highest; it's the small version of our winning chef's knife and has all the same qualities we like in the larger version: Its blade is sharpened to 15 degrees on either side, so it's nimble and effective, and it's lightweight.

As for the kids in the middle of the pack, the 10- and 11-year-olds, their preference between the Opined and the Victorinox came down to their hand size and level of experience in the kitchen. Performance: We evaluated the knives on their out-of-the-box sharpness and ability to dice vegetables, mince herbs, and slice cheese and tomatoes.

Knives fared best if they had sharp, thin blades that sliced smoothly and didn't require lots of force. Well-placed medium-strength magnets made it easy to attach all our knives, and a rotating base gave us quick access to them.

An acrylic guard afforded extra protection against contact with blades but made it a little harder to insert knives and to clean; the wood itself got a little scratched during use. This is small, scratch-resistant model had a stable, rubber-lined base and could hold all our knives, though the blade of the 12-inch slicing knife stuck out a bit.

(Source: www.steelbluekitchen.com)

While all our knives fit securely, several of the blades stuck out, making this unit feel less safe overall. Finally, though the bristles could be removed and cleaned in the dishwasher, their nooks and crannies made this block hard to wash by hand.

This plastic block required us to aim each knife into the folds of an accordion-pleated insert that was removable for easy cleaning but got nicked easily with repeated use. Because we could only insert the knives vertically, longer knife blades stuck out; a cleaver was too wide to fit.

One question I get asked a lot here at Kids Cook Real Food is: “What is a good kid-safe knife?” 0:47: We start out with a quick rating of each knife in case you want the overview but don’t want all the details of the review.

Technically they’re made for cutting lettuce, but I’ve seen them promoted as good kid-safe knives. They actually teach poor knife skills and aren’t good for much more than lettuce and maybe some cucumbers.

Since the blade is so short you can’t easily cut something like an apple, and it may not be heavy-duty enough for a carrot. It’s definitely a good option for a kid just getting started since it can cut softer vegetables like cucumbers, zucchini, and mushrooms.

They don’t have a point which could be a pro or a con depending on the age and skill of your child. 6:55: Next up is the Kai Little Chef knife which is very similar in shape to the Touched with a dull point, but it’s longer and sharper.

If you don’t want a pointy tip, this is the closest you’re going to get to a real chef knife for your child. Paul likes this one because he can wash his hands frequently and the handle doesn’t get slippery.

It’s ranked #2 by America’s Test Kitchen and is significantly more affordable than the #1 Author. Paul’s only complaint about this knife is that the plastic of the handle extends past the bottom edge of the blade so you sometimes have to adjust your grip.

It’s nice and sharp and a good size for advanced knife skill students. 14:28: The 6 Author chef’s knife is our “standard for excellence” because it’s my personal favorite that I’ve had for many years.

Because it’s a full tang, well-made knife it will probably last longer than the others we’ve shown here, but it’s also the most expensive. 15:43: We have a pair of safety gloves specifically made for children.

I have a vivid memory of wearing my oldest in the baby carrier and bouncing up and down to calm the tears while stirring soup. Not only do I want my kids to be able to cook a decent meal (from whole, fresh food) by the time they leave the nest, I want them to have an appreciation for good, real food.

To that end, my husband and I have been systematically teaching cooking skills and today I’d like to highlight knives. Now there are two ways to teach knife skills, one requiring the purchase of special knives and one that’s free.

(Source: www.youtube.com)

I show both of my lists so you know there’s no reason to spend money to teach your kids how to chop unless you want to do so. A tall blade is best to allow a proper hold on the knife.

We found the best way to use the knife was on strips of vegetables. While the knives are not sharp enough for a child to cut a whole apple or potato in half, still insist on good knife safety.

Purchase free option: a disposable plastic knife (too thin for a proper hold, but would work in a pinch!) It is the excessive pushing that lead to our “cut”/severe pinch episode.

I would highly recommend these knives for any young kid looking to learn knife skills (and the set of 3 is only $8! The set comes with a metal knife, finger guard, and peeler.

The size of the knife is perfect for our kids (ages 3 and 5), and the handles/finger holes do a great job reinforcing correct form. My kids are not to this stage yet, but the next step in my mind will be a real knife.

The height of all three of those blades is not ideal (There’s not enough room under the handle to curl the fingers around properly), but I’m doubting my child will be able to handle the weight of my favorite Santos…maybe! The key here is once they’ve mastered the metal kid’s knife, there’s no reason to hold them back from the real thing.

Purchase free option: I envision this step not needing a special knife (subject to change when we get to this stage!). Set him or her off on the right track by teaching kitchen skills like chopping, slicing, and dicing from a young age.

These 3 steps of knives (plastic, beginner metal, and the real thing) will help you instruct your child how to safely use kitchen knives. You’re given the knife with the implicit agreement that you’re responsible and old enough to be trusted with a tool that’s often misused by those who are reckless, untrustworthy, and immature.

I first wrote this post way back in April 2012, so I decided to take a fresher look at some of the best first knives to give someone. Since the Tinker is a bit smaller and still has a variety of tools, it could potentially come in handy more often and further empower the knife’s owner.

There’s also something special in giving (or getting) a knife with such a deep tradition and classic look and feel of a Schrader Old Timer. In a way, fixed blades can often be safer than folding knives because there are no moving parts involved.

However, if your kid spends a lot of time outdoors, a fixed blade can be an excellent option. Moran, the maker of the classic Morey knives, makes a few models especially for younger kids.

The AXIS lock helps keep the hands out of the way of closing the knife, the size is good with a blade just under 3 inches, and the design is simple and nonthreatening. If the kid is responsible, a Mini Reptilian would make an excellent first knife, though don’t get upset if they end up losing it somewhere.

The Opined No 7 Scout is a good knife with a lock and a rounded tip to prevent accidental pokes. This knife has good steel on its 3-inch blade and a very drippy Prayer handle, so it will stay in a kid dirty hands.

It doesn’t lock shut but it’s hard to beat this traditional folder as a first knife. If that’s the case, you might want to grab Nathan’s Knife Kit as a precursor to the real deal.

We feel your pain and will help you choose the best chef knives for beginners. Chef knives were originally made for removing meat from animal carcasses without cutting through the bone.

Due to the size and shape of the blade, chef knives can be used for nearly any cutting activity including trimming fat off steaks, carving turkey, dicing and mincing vegetables and meat among other many tasks. The comfort and feel in your hand in every slice is one of the most important features that will make your knife special.

The discussion about the best chef knife for beginners cannot be complete without comparing blade materials. Even though they are tougher, stainless steel blades are softer in a sense that they do not chip easily on high impact.

High Carbon Steel Blades : These are incredibly sharp, making them a perfect option for precision cutting. Another shortcoming of high carbon steel blades is that they are susceptible to stains and rust.

Ceramic Blades : They are made of very hard materials, making them highly durable and retain their edge for an extended period of time. The length of the blade is another important aspect to consider when buying a beginner chef knife.

However, good chef knives have a way of balancing weight in between the handle and the blade. This is because there is a higher risk of losing the control of the knife. So the best chef knives for beginners should be sharp.

Thus, when finding the best chef knives for beginners, do not let the presence or absence of a bolster influence your choice. When choosing your best chef knives for beginners make sure that the handle is comfortable in your hand.

Note that handles can be made from a wide range of materials; include metals, composite plastic and wood. For maintenance and durability composite plastic is the best choice as it does not rot or induce mildew when exposed to the moisture for a long time.

The edge or bevel is the slopping sides of the blade that enables it to cut through substances. German style knives are known as double beveled because both side slope to the end and form a sharp edge.

Japanese style knives, on the other hand, are referred to as single-beveled because only one side of the blade is sloped to form the sharp edge. German beginner chef knives have a double bevel design in which both sides slope to around 20 degrees angle towards the edge.

(Source: www.novanatural.com)

This makes them durable enough to retain the sharpness for long despite heavy duty cutting tasks. Japanese chef knives have a single bevel design in which one side of the knife is sharpened at a 15 degrees angle or even less.

This explains why Japanese chef knives are ideal for meticulous cuttings such as sushi and fillet. The cutting edge is sharpened after the blade made and the knife has the same thickness allover.

The only shortcoming of stamped chef knives is that they need to be sharpened regularly and might need to be replaced sooner. Forged Knives : They are created by passing extreme heat over a piece of steel and then molding it into the desired sharp.
