Place the frozen peaches, oats, brown sugar, vanilla, salt and 8 cups water in the bowl of a slow cooker. Meanwhile, toast the sliced almonds and flaked coconut separately in dry nonstick skillets over medium heat, shaking the pans frequently to ensure an even toast, until golden and fragrant, 3 to 4 minutes.

To serve, stir the raisins, milk and cream into the oat mixture. Spoon into bowls and garnish with the almonds, coconut, blueberries and a drizzle of honey.

In a bowl, mix together the oats, milk, half-and-half, raisins, brown sugar, vanilla, salt and apple. Give the mixture a stir and add a bit more milk or half-and-half if it has become too thick.

Put a healthy portion in an ovenproof bowl and smooth out the top. Serve with blueberries, raspberries, strawberries and a little more half-and-half, if desired.

Special equipment: a 6-quart slow cooker Combine the oats, nutmeg, bananas and cinnamon stick in a 6-quart slow cooker with 7 1/2 cups water and 1/8 teaspoon salt. For toasted sliced almonds: Add 1/3 cup sliced almonds to a dry skillet and toast over medium heat, shaking the skillet frequently, until golden brown, 3 to 5 minutes.

In the other corner, we have the PioneerWoman (known less formally as Free Drummond), blogger extraordinaire and raiser of wild horses. In addition to chopped Granny Smith apple and raisins, the recipe calls for 2 heaping tablespoons of brown sugar.

The fruit and sugar take a bath with whole milk, half-and-half, vanilla extract, salt, and a full cup of rolled oats. As I tossed the mixture together, I couldn’t help but notice that this was a lot of food, yet the serving size said 1-2.

If I ate a cup of oats in the morning, I think I’d fall asleep at my desk, I thought to myself. Drummond says to refrigerate the mixture overnight; mine sat for about 12 hours.

Unsurprisingly, this recipe was not reliant on dairy or refined sugar for flavor and richness. A mixture of ½ cup gluten-free quick-cooking oats (she says rolled oats won’t absorb the liquid properly), chia seeds, almond milk, dates, cocoa powder, vanilla extract, salt, cinnamon, and fresh orange juice, it certainly felt nutrient-dense.

Pal trow says the oatmeal can be mixed together in a mason jar or bowl, and it should sit for at least 2 hours or up to two days. The next morning, as I ruled the PioneerWoman ’s oatmeal, I couldn’t help but think that this is something I would never do, especially not on a weekday.

I think a handful of toasted nuts or seeds for some crunch would’ve made this even better. Oh, I know what you’re thinking, ‘Oaaaatmeaaaal.” Sigh, “But Kit, we don’t come to your blog for oatmeal.” but trust me on this one.

Besides, if it was all ‘ Sandwiches ‘ and deep-fried lasagna this blog would be all about my cardiac arrest and struggle with opening Lean Cuisine boxes. Sure indigence is fun, but we have to keep it straight and narrow if we want Handsome to stick around to build me something new and spiffy (or fix that bike that’s been hanging in the garage for a few weeks now * hint wink wink *).

I like apples in mine, but I hear that there are crazy disturbed people out there that put berries in their breakfast. If you’ve been reading Pass the Sushi, you’ll know I’m not a fan of the first meal of the day, and often skip it until lunch.

This oatmeal is packed with flavor, has a great texture, reminded me of childhood breakfasts and was something I wanted to love. You can also follow along for more good eats and travel tips on Instagram @passthesushi & @girlcarnivore, Twitter & Facebook.

If desired, serve with additional milk, walnuts and cinnamon. Each kind of oats is as healthy for you as the next, but with slight differences in texture and cooking time.

You'll find that steel-cut oatmeal takes 20-30 minutes to cook, and your finished dish will have a chewier, more toothsome texture than other kinds of oatmeal. Use seasonal fruits and berries for sweetness, and reach for nuts and seeds (like chia, flax or sunflower) to add texture and more protein.

To really mix things up, skip the sugar and treat your oatmeal as a savory breakfast grain bowl topped with a soft-cooked egg, spinach and bacon. You can mix in applesauce to sweeten your oatmeal, or top each bowl with agave nectar, honey or maple syrup.
