Silver-plate has a low resale value but is worth more when it is in excellent condition and is a rare or sought-after pattern. Wm Rogers silver-plate patterns ranged from the sleek and spare elegance of 1915's Mulberry and 1942's Hostess to the ornate explosion of botanical forms on the handles of 1908's Lily and 1965's Beverly Manor.
Look for the maker's mark, a stamped eagle and star flanking the name Wm Rogers on the back of a handle. Send a clear photograph, or a rubbing of the design made on white tissue with a lead pencil, to a jeweler or antique vendor who deals in silverware.
William Rogers pioneered the silverplate industry in America. However, it can be arduous to attribute pieces of flatware to him because his name was appropriated by many companies during his lifetime and for generations after his death.
When trying to identify William Rogers flatware, examine the piece for the manufacturer's name, symbol, date and pattern. Look for the manufacturer's name engraved in very small print on the back of the piece of flatware.
Rogers were the Alhambra, Beauty, Orange Blossom and Rose. A. Rogers often used the Glen rose, Grenoble, Carnation and La Concorde patterns.
You can find pictures of these patterns and others in the Encyclopedia of American Silver Manufacturers. The men managing the various Rogers companies sometimes were linked by family relationships but often this was not the case.
Lots of companies with this name were created, merged, separated in an endless succession of intertwined relationships. In 1898 Meriden Britannia Co and various other independent New England silversmiths joined themselves together to form the International Silver Co that became the world's largest manufacturer of silverware.
